Boriqua Hachi

PR for the 86.

Well after you said that the Corolla was ugly it didn't bother me, I'm a Toyota guy and before drifting I was introduced to it in drag racing, with both the AE86 and the real "old school" Corollas. Now I love this car to death and I think it's a pretty nice looking retro car, but if people are going to make you guys sound stupid then they should get their facts straight, first of all it was released from 1984-1987 and comes stock with 128 hp and if memory serves me correct 108 lb-ft torque.

Now for all you Initial D fan boys you people annoy me because you act like the cartoon is real. It's not, they try to japanese it and talk about auras come on really.

Next, the Corolla is a great drifting car in the right hands of tuners and drivers not just any stupid white boy who buys a hard to find car like this and wrecks it. Why do you think we have more of those crappy SR5 Corollas than the GTS> There is no Trueno here so stop calling it that.

And as far as NFSU2 i think it's good for the Corolla to be in it, but if it's going to be limited then they shouldn't put it and if you think it's ugly than better for me when it comes time for me to get one next year cause then I can join the rest of the people who get their AE's for less than $800. $3,500 for a 20 yr old car? ha ha suckers!

And by the way I love the site and why don't you do a pro and con editorial on Corollas and can you guys do something on the Puerto Rican racing scene, thanks love you guys, really call me.

Debunking the Hachi

A reality check for some from a GamePro.

Heya Ty,

Your Corrola ("Hachiroku") mailbag caught my eye and so would like to offer reasons why the AE86 is overhyped.

First off, a used decent condition AE86 with absolutely no modifications costs about $15,000 in Japan--compare that to an 280hp R32 GT-R which costs anywhere from $8-12k. That's right, a 100hp econocar costs more than a finely tuned sports car. And why? All because of that Initial D comic--to all the wannabe drifters out there, drifting is actually slower, because a lot of valuable time and speed is killed when your rear end slips so much.

And all of this G35/VQ hating's a bit absurd, especially when the Nissan GT-R will also be a VQ engine with twin turbo (boasting 350+ hp). Plus, how can anybody compare a G35 VQ engine (which is naturally aspirated) to a RB26DETT (which has a twin turbo)?

That's like saying the new Mustang sucks because it's slower than the old Mustang Cobra--you're comparing completely different trims. Compare the Nissan GT-R to the Skyline GT-R and you have a fair matchup.

SRT-4 Review Comments

One reader agrees, do you?

Excellent review on the SRT-4. I've been an '04 owner since Last november and I absolutely love my car. ONe thing you neglected to mention however: aftermarket potenial.

The SRT can have more than 350 hp just by adding kits from dodge. The Stage 3 kit has been released and there are companys selling kits that produce 400-500+ hp for less than a combined cost of around $5000. But all in all, you did a great job of reviewing the anti-Neon.

NFSU2 Reader Car List

Taking matters into his own hands.

You asked to let you guys know about what we don't like with the car list... Well I've been on the boards for a long time and have noticed the following things..

  • People are going insane now because of the new facts about not including the NSX and S2000, honestly I am starting to reconsider purchasing this game after taking two of the hottest rides in the import culture.

  • Some people have that burning desire for JDM stuff, and including a Corolla isn't good enough, you need to put the Trueno, and get some big JDM companies.

  • I dearly miss the MR2, Silvia S13,14,15, Skyline R33, Honda del Sol, 300ZX, 240Z (Old school fun the hardcore imoprt lovers), Civic Hatback, Acura Integra, BMW M3, Current Gen. Eclipse, and a few others...

Sure the game looks good, but it's missing SERIOUS stuff, I want Underground 3 to feature these cars or at least the NSX, MR2, and Silvia, CMON!! E3 2005?? Hahaha can't wait cmon EA, and if IGN does send this to you please listen to what I am saying becuase I am speaking for a large group of enthusiats that are nuts for you games. Keep it up.

    - Scott

(Ty responds: We sent this link to EA, maybe they'll keep your thoughts in mind come NFSU3.)

    AE Bashing Welcomed

Note: Keep ricers away from the 86.

Found this site from an ae86 forum and saw your review of the ae86 in the Need for Speed Underground section. Because you were dissing it as an 'ugly' car and why such ppl would want it I was pretty pissed off initially. But then you kinda did all the ae86 fans a favor by deterring kids and ricers who never heard of this car.

Need for Speed Underground is a ricer game and the fact that it attracts the ricers would mean that the best cars would end up being molestered by them sticking 10ft wings and altezzas lights and all the other nasty trends that The Fast and Furious set off.

The reason why I like the Corolla is that they are the very rare jap cars that ricers don't molest. None of the all-show-no-go-bling-bling crap that the Honda scene is so popular for. It's a proper car that owners wouldn't give a slightest toss about how they look on the street. In other words it's a man's car which doesn't need dressing up like a CR-X to make their owners feel good about their car.

Keep the dissing up as you'll be doing all the ae86fans a VERY VERY big favour.

    Scion tC in NFSU2?

Where is the new Toyota coupe?

I would like to see a Scion tC. I just got mine and it would cool to see one.

    - Steve

(Ty responds: We'd love to see one in there too. It's not in NFSU2, but that doesn't mean it won't be in Underground 3 or other games. )

    Hachi Love Cont'd

To our dismay, you keep trying to convince us...

Look, I'm not going to ridicule your ignorance of this car. An AE86 is an AE86, no matter what bumpers and name came attached to it. If you know anything about cars, you know that this is the CHASSIS code, not the bumper code.

Anyway, your little comments about our beloved Corolla's are not taken too well. Guess what, there are MANY of us that were into this car LONG BEFORE many of today's so called "tuners" even heard of drifting. There are members on Club4AG.com that have had there AE for years. One has had since the day it rolled off the showroom.

Many of us have owned more than one at a time and know that no matter how much technology progresses and engine power goes up, this car is a one of kind. It's handling is superb, it's engine, by no means fast, is excellent for the car as it is lightweight and responisve and will last MANY miles (some with over 300 thousand miles on them and still kicking).

Before you go slamming a car that you obviously know NOTHING about, perhaps you should do some research. There is an unexplainable attraction to this car once you've sat behind the wheel and fired the 4AG for the first time. The sound the 4AG (even the lowly bluetop) makes is addictive, the predictablity of the car is fantastic, and the overall simplicity of working on it is amazing.

This car has some serious history behind it. One of the greatest drivers of our time (if you really are an enthusiast as you say, you should know who I mean without a doubt in your mind) thinks the AE86 is one of the best cars to drive ever.

I'm sorry for your obvious ignorance to our "hachi's," but not every one who owns one dreams of being some superstar drifter. I have a friend who has been into this car since it came out when he was a kid. He is the PROUD owner of more than likely the most poweful 4AGE powered AE86 in the country, if not the world. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to supply you with what he has done to it along with pictures, but please do note that just because you know nothing of the car and obviously don't care to, that doesn't mean that you need to bash it.

Yes, the AE86 is typically a slow car. Yes, it is an old design. Some people like old school (me for instance) so deal with that. I can appreciate new cars, but Toyota, nor anyone else, will EVER make a car like this one again.

With all the safety requirements and luxury items that today's consumer demand, the want and desire for a car like this again for a mass market is almost nil. Be that as it may, there is a STRONG following to this car that has been around long before and will be around long after most of today's "tuners" move on to the next big thing.

A large amount of people that drive these stupid fast cars do not do their own work. What's the point of OWNING a car that is highly modified if you can't tell a clutch slave cylinder from a fuel pump? I'm sure some will disagree with me, but you know, I don't care. Yes, my little AE with it's blistering 100 hp to the wheels will more than likely NEVER be as fast most cars on the road today.

When I go out to my car everyday, I don't see a tool to get me from here to there. I see a car with a soul. It's made me a better driver. It's made me get under my car and tear stuff apart just to keep it running from the abuse it takes. It makes me think what I can do to help push it further to it's limits, both with my driving and it's setup.

So please, don't flame on something you don't understand. You prove yourself quite ignorant in doing so. And just watch what you say. You've not only angered the car's fans, but the Initial D fanboy's as well...and they can be an interesting lot. I invite you to come down to Club4AG.com for yourself and see what we're about. Just a warning that the site is a tad slow due to the traffic it gets. In a sense, the site itself is a good reflection of the true nature of the car: you don't need to be fast to be good.

My thought with the car is this: you don't need a fast car to be a fast driver. Other good quotes I've seen on Club4Ag are, "straights are for fast cars, corners are for fast drivers," drifting is 10 percent car and 90 percent driver," and lastly, my favorite from our resident e-thug, "AE86 is a POS, I want to burn them all." Maybe that last one doesn't make much sense to you, but if you read around, it'll make sense.

I hope you come by and check the site out. You'll see that not only do we love the Corolla, Trueno, Levin, POS, whatever you want to call it, there's a strong sense of community and friendship here. Yes, we have our idiots and arguements, but we all share one thing: the passion for an old, slow, most of the time rusty, rear wheel drive Corolla.

    - Jason

(Ty responds: Some good points. But I totally disagree that a driver has to work on his own car. I, myself, do work on my own car and I HATE it. To me, it's a giant waste of time. I'd rather concentrate on being a better writer or driver than a sh*tty mechanic.

Just because you work on one car doesn't mean you can work on them all. Yes, cars are mostly the same and it is useful to know the difference between a slave cylinder and a master cylinder and what they do, but I have other ways to spend my weekends. )
