Nothing but the best for these guys! Dr. Hy-Vee, Mello Yellow, Root Beer, Cola...
Hee Haw? At least there’s one non-converted hick in the bunch that brought
his A&W.
Do any of you guys ever get that itch that makes you scramble through all of your
old PC game CDs? The kind that makes you install some of your old time favorite
shooters, just to come to the realization that no one, at least no one you know
currently plays them?
Well the guys over at LANmaniac have
got your fix! For their April 9th 2005 event they will be holding a “THROW
BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF GAMING!” LAN. Where the only games of
the night will be Quake, Quake 2 and UTGOTY! But if the occasional Kingpin
slips in every now, that seems okay.
On April 9th 2005 LANmaniac will be holding an old school FPS LAN. On
this date our ONLY focus will be on old school shooters. As of right now the
only games on our radar are Quake, Quake 2
and Unreal Tournament (possibly some Kingpin). If you are
a 100% hardcore Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty or Unreal Tournament 2004 guy...
this event is NOT for you. But if you are up for the challenge, you are more
than welcome to attend! We just don't want a bunch of babies showing up that
cant handle the outdated graphics and superior gameplay.
Along with this LAN we will also be throwing a LANmaniac BBQ! The BBQ is a
community BBQ where everyone helps to pitch in. When we get the total bill
of expense we break it down by the number of people attending, so it normally
works out to around $6 per head.
If interested, we would be very pleased to see you show up and show your
support for these great old school games!
Scott of Everything USB
just gave the new Logitech MX518 a LAN Party test drive and now he has organized his thoughts into one hell of a detailed review.
Optical illusions are fascinating. What are really just a few dots of ink can effectively fool the mind's depth perception and color recognition, enough to make you look twice and try to feel what's actually there. The MX518 takes advantage of this art with its new faceplate. A dark metallic silver color appears to absorb light in different areas, giving off the appearance of very deep dents in the mouse itself. The Swiss-cheese-like 'holes' are very similar to the NASA photos of moon craters, or perhaps more like someone putting speed holes in a new car with a pickaxe. Whatever it looks like, it will definitely pull attention on store shelves with the see-through box it's packaged in.
Check out the complete REVIEW which covers in game testing, Logitech software, and surface performance. -Devil 2 U

It is official; the wonderful people over at Vivendi
Universal Games have just dropped their support of Tribes Vengeance by not
release the long awaited patch that they had promised
(this isn't the first time). I guess that when you have big titles on your hand
like Half-Life 2 (that is more popular
and making MUCH more money) that you set everything else aside. So for anyone
who thinks that money doesn’t make the world go round, you are wrong.
Well according to VUG at least.
It has been foreseen for some time now that Vivendi Universal Games just plain
and simply never had any interest in the Tribes franchise at all. First off
was their stupidity with rushing the game out before it was finished and into
the death trap called Doom 3 and Half-Life 2. Which was for sure one of the
biggest release months ever? Then there is their lack of promoting the game,
their CHEAP packaging, their lack of promoting the game and rumors surrounding
the idea that VUG was using Tribes Vengeance as a steeping stone for other VUG
projects.
The first clue hinting that the patch was nowhere in sight was when Starsiege:2845
cancelled their MOD project for Tribes Vengeance and moved onto their own game
with the GarageGames Torque
Shader Engine. The second clue was when RenWerX
cancelled their MOD project for Tribes Vengeance in a chance to jump onto the
community supported and built Legends
game, which is also based upon the Torque
Engine.
For a history lesson just in case you didn’t know or care, the Torque
Engine is the insane engine that brought you the vast worlds of Tribes, Starsiege,
and Tribes 2. Another tidbit is that Starsiege:2845 was originally planned to
be released as an Unreal 2003
mod. But when Tribes Vengeance was announced, they changed course for a
game that was closer to the roots of what they where creating.
Now as a long time loyal Tribes supporter and fan, sticking with the Tribes
series and the trash that they call Tribes Vengeance, I’m disgusted by
VUG’s business practice. Like most hardcore Tribes fans I had hopes that
a patch and more involvement by VUG would get this game out of the slump and
give it the chance that it deserves.
But now we are left with a one legged game that is on the verge of its extinction
all because VUG never committed to it in the first place. Because of Vivendi
Universal Games, it will sure be a cold day in hell before I consider purchasing
another one of their non block buster titles again.
It's now time to schedule that one week off from work and tune up the old station
wagon! Quakecon 2005 has just been announced! Last year I didn’t make
the LAN because I was in a bind with work and no big Quake games where making
an appearance, only Doom 3 .
This time around I'm unemployed and hope that I have a job by the time Quakecon
2005 comes around and that my employer will let me off the hook for the duration
of the event
MESQUITE, Texas – March 22, 2005 – In August 2005, QuakeCon,

Mac users can now join in on the fun as an OS X client has also been released. Let up see what Splash Damage have to say about the new patch.

All existing players and server administrators should install the patch - see the included ReadMe for a list of Whats New and installation instructions. Shoot better photos with your camera
The Tech Zone has a quick 3 page article on how you can take better digital photos. Why is this important for LAN parties you ask? Promotion and documentation of your events is key for future success. Check out their 9 tips that will help you become a better photographer.
The shutter is that part of the camera which opens briefly to allow light to strike the sensitive surface of the detector to produce an image. Fast moving object require extremely short shutter speeds in order to capture a crisp sharp image. Slower shutter speeds will produce a blur as the object moves. In general outdoor photography a shutter speed of 1/60th or 1/125th second will be acceptable. In contrast, shooting a formula one car in motion will require shutter speed of say 1/1000th of a second.
Read their TIPS so you will be prepared for the next LAN Party you attend or host. Then send us your great looking images for the entire world to see in our Party Pic o' The Day!
GideonTech recently completed a write up on yet another product for transporting your PC to and from LAN parties.
Here is a sample of their opening blurb:
Let's face it. Most people mod computers with the understanding that
sooner or later their creation is going to be taken to a LAN party.
Unfortunately the road to a LAN party is fraught with danger. Your
case can be scratched, dinged, or otherwise damaged. Not to mention
it's a pain to carry around all of the extra gear like your keyboard, mouse, and cables. Thankfully Sunbeam has a rather nifty solution to
all of these problems
Not quite sure if I agree with their opinion that hauling yourself and your gear to a LAN party is sooooooooooo dangerous and difficult :P ...but check out their REVIEW and form your own conclusions.

NewEgg LANfest2K5 Announced
Just received some information that NewEgg will be hosting another big LAN party in the Southern California area. KFC and myself both attended this LAN last year and it was a blast.
Here is what they had to say in their newsletter:
PC gamers from across the nation assembled at the Pasadena Convention Center last April for Newegg.com's premiere local area network PC gaming competition, LANfest2k4. More than 400 attendees braved scorching temperatures to participate in what became the largest event of its type in Southern California history. This year Newegg.com will throw another LANfest, this time at a new location and on a much grander scale. A more robust multi-player tournament and larger BYOC area will headline this year's event. LANfest2k5 will also have more entertainment, prizes and the opportunity to hobnob with fellow gamers, spectators, vendors, media, industry professionals and Newegg.com staff. Stay tuned for more
Rest assured, we will bring you more information on this event as details emerge. In the meantime, check out the ARTICLE I wrote about LANFest 2K4! -Devil 2 U

Texas Gaming Festival LAN Party Coverage
The Texas Gaming festival recently held their big event in Dallas, Texas and Cool Tech Zone was on hand to cover the event. Check out what they have to say about the LAN, contests, and sponsors.
The Texas Gaming festival is a successful LAN event that has been taking place in Dallas, Texas for the past few years. Over the years, it has become one of the top most visited and sponsored LAN events in the nation with attendance easily surpassing the 500-attendee attendance. This year was no different. In fact, this was perhaps the most successful attempt at a LAN event especially when ATI decided to launch its X850 XT PE 512MB graphics card officially.

The State of Linux Gaming
As a popular alternative to Windows, Linux has gathered the support of computer enthusiasts for some time. But is it a platform for gaming?
HEXUS.net takes a look at this platform and the benefits it can offer a gamer in terms of loading speed, performance, and much more. The review takes a good look at the advantages and disadvantages of gaming on a Linux OS.
Well, Linux certainly isn't most peoples' thought for a games-based PC. Especially one being taken to a big tournament LAN party. However, by design or trickery, none of the tournament games at the event were out-of-bounds to my Linux machine, and rousing games of Call of Duty, Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004 were shared by the HEXUS.net collective and any other gamers who felt like joining in.
