Mailbag: March 29

Hi there. Late night in Norway, I`m picky. You write in your old review of the GBC port of Genesis Alladin that Crawedog added 3 difficulties to the GBC port. The genesis game had 3 difficulty settings also. Atleast the NA release :P . Sorry.

Eirik

Geez, I wrote that review like four years ago, and now you have a problem with it? Does the Internet in Norway work like radiowaves in space? Man, I can't wait to hear your assessment of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for the GBA.

Hi. I love the site, and I think the editors are doing a really great job. I do have a request though. Could you please not put the really stupid letters in the mailbag? I love reading the mailbag for the good stuff, but I hate reading the ignorant and annoying messages. It is why I haven't been to a video game discussion board in a long time-- I don't like the pissy, stupid, neurotic, complaining, posts that people are compelled to express. Honestly, I wouldn't hang out with those people in real life, and I definitely don't want to hear that crap! Please I beg of you, I know there have to be intelligent, cool people who also want to talk about games. Use those letters!

Ty.

So, where would you rank your own letter? I'd personally slot it in the "pissy" one myself.

Any word if Ubisoft will be making a version of Lumines for the GBA?

James

I honestly doubt it'll happen anytime soon, if at all. The game is certainly simple enough in concept to move over to the Game Boy Advance, but it would lose a lot in the translation because of the PSP-specific elements like the interactive soundtrack and vibrant 2D effects moving from skin to skin. Plus, the game's one of the top selling PSP titles at the moment, and its timeless design might keep this one on the system's top 10.

But like I said, the concept itself is simple enough to work on lesser hardware, so hey...you never know.

I was looking at one of the old Nintendo Power issues (vol. 182 to be exact), and saw a list of future game boy games that would be compatible with the wireless adapter. And to my surprise, The Minish Cap was one of them! Did the game originally have multiplayer in it? If so, why did Nintendo take it out?

Ed

Yeah, the Minish Cap originally had a concept where players would trade Kinstones using the Wireless Adapter. Obviously it was an idea that didn't pan out, since the final product doesn't offer any sort of trading...even with a link cable.

Well, if the next gameboy comes and competes with the psp and the ds, I think that would be a problem. But then I thought, you know what, Why is everybody always obsessed with making smaller and smaller chips?

Percy

I dunno, some people are happy with the size of their chips.

Reading up on the preview for Wario Ware Twisted got me thinking about another great game using a motion-sensitive cartridge - Kirby Tilt 'N' Tumble. It's been a while since I've played it, but the other day I dusted it off and plugged it into my SP. Much to my surprise, the tilt feature was backwards due to the SP's cartridge slot being located on the bottom half of the unit. Now, having just sold my regular GBA in favor of the SP, I'm left with only being able to play the game on my Game Boy Color. Anyhow, the point of all this is to ask whether you guys know if Wario Ware Twisted will have some kind of inverse control option to allow play on both the GBA and the GBA SP.

Seedy

The motion sensing chip in Wario Ware works differently than the one that's in Kirby's Tilt 'n Tumble. The chip in Wario Ware senses rotation, where the Tilt 'n Tumble chip sensed tilt direction. With Wario Ware, No matter which direction the cartridge is positioned, clockwise and counter-clockwise are always interpolated the same since the cartridges facing the same way in the slot...just upside down. But with Tilt 'n Tumble, the cart always expects to be positioned the Game Boy Color way...and switching that affected the direction it thought it was being tilted. So while you were tilting the SP, say, left, it assumed the cartridge was being tilted to the right, and moved Kirby that way.

What ever happened to Payback? I know it came out in europe, but is DSI ever going to release it in North America?

Picc

Payback is definitely available as an import. But for North America, the publisher's finding a hard time working the Mature rated game into stores. It's hard to profit on the Game Boy Advance without good, retail exposure.

I have just one simple question: what the hell happened to the GBA version of Shantae?

Eric

Shantae Advance is a project that gets worked on in the "free time" of Matt Bozon's team at Way Forward. It's not a licensed brand so it's a hard sell to publishers to pick up the game as a full-on GBA development project. You can read up on all things Shantae related at the official Shantae website, www.shantae.com.
