New Mod: Experience World War 2 11:13 PM | Apr 1 2005 | Rico | 18 Comments
If you happened to of played Battlefield 1942 and been familiar with the mods then you should recognise this new mod for Battlefield 2. Experience World War 2 (XWW2) have announced that they will be moving to the BF2 engine:
The Experience World War 2 will soon be moving over from BF1942 to Battlefield 2. This is one of Battlefield 1942's oldest mods, it was created around a month after the release of Battlefield 1942 to make as realistic of an WW2 experience as possible given the engine's capabilities. The mod has since evolved from a simple realistic addon to its own full fledged realistic WW2 mod. We are eagerly awaiting the release of Battlefield 2, we hope that it'll allow for much more modability to reach our vision for the mod. We already have a wealth of original content that we'll be over to port over, but we need new modelers and skinners to help us with creating any new content. If you feel the you in any way would like to help the mod, send an email.
With year's of good work and models behind them they will certainly be a WW2 mod to watch out for. You can find their website here.

Computer Gaming World Short Preview 3:41 AM | Mar 31 2005 | waTR | 21 Comments
The Computer Gaming World magazine has a new preview on their website for all to view. However, If you get the magazine there is a good chance you have already seen this. The preview may not really shed any light on anything new but is still a good read if only just to share in the feeling of playing BF2.
A Predator, the unmanned aerial vehicle that's tele-fragged at least two top-ranking al Qaeda members in the real-world war on terror, talks us to our target: a small Middle-Eastern Coalition (MEC) force probing our outpost's perimeter. I'm sitting forward in an AH-1W Super Cobra's gunner seat with one of EA's finest behind me on the cyclic control stick. I see silhouettes through my cannon camera, a sterilizing filter that sets a surreal screen between my 20mm and the men in its crosshairs. "Smoke 'em," the pilot says as he holds a practiced hover.
Sure sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun to play.
The Soviet Barracks is a more hardened-looking structure than its Allied counterpart, but serves exactly the same function. A Barracks like this is required if advanced infantry forces are to be trained; lose it, and you lose this ability. Even without the barracks, however, the most basic infantry can still be used: the rifle infantry and the technician. Everything else, from the lowly grenadier to the mighty Volkov, requires a Barracks. As such, this structure will be featured on a very large percentage of maps.
Rise of Kobol Mod Update 4:02 PM | Mar 30 2005 | Rico | 3 Comments
The Rise of Kobol team has just released an update regarding their newly skinned Viper MK I.
It's been a week since our last news, but it was worth it. The Viper MK I got a sexy skin thanks to a new member of the RoK team, Sabotage. This guy is amazing and is only getting started. What's next you ask, how about a camo texture for the Viper MK I for ground maps. And things are only getting started over here at RoK.
For all you Battlestar Galactica fans out there this may take your fancy. You can find their website here.
New Mod: War of Wars 3:49 PM | Mar 30 2005 | Rico | 14 Comments
Another WWII mod has now emerged on the Battlefield 2 scene. War of Wars have just one render to show today but also explain why they are not "just another WWII mod":
The long anticipated announcement of War of Wars has finally happened, and I was the one picked to post and tell you about our mod and how things are going. War of Wars (WOW) is a World War II Based Modification for Battlefield 2. WOW will be including parts of the war never seen in the battlefield franchise, and some never seen in a game before. I know what most people are thinking, "yet another WWII Modification for Battlefield", but try to think positive for once about this. Here at WOW we have basically took an oath to bring the community more then what has ever been brought to them before, with realistic battlefields, weapons, vehicles, and gameplay, which I will touch up on more next week. For now, I would like to go ahead and just show you one of many models we have already done, the following Model you may recognize if your an American, its the famous M1 Garand.
For the full update head over to their website which also explains about future updates to look forward to.
Check out these awesome new renders we received of the Chinese troops, and one of the MEC.
Now all we need are some good in-game screenshots of those snipers in action!

Battlefield 2 Community Update 7:28 AM | Mar 29 2005 | Stadler | 31 Comments
The Official Battlefield 2 website has released a community update showing some more information on the Battlefield 2 Editor. It includes a 2 page analysis of what it will take to carry out Vehicle Creation and Character Animation. This is definetly a must read for all you eager modders out there. Here is a segment from the update along with some screenshots.
Example 1: Creating a Custom Vehicle
For those of you that have created vehicles for Battlefield 1942 or Vietnam, you are probably used to creating each of the pieces, copying the .con files from an existing vehicle, and then hacking those files to reference your new assets.
With the new BF2 Editor, the process is much simpler. The first step is still modeling the object in an art package, but now instead of creating each piece in a separate file, such as a tank body, the turret, the guns, the wheels, and so on, and then hooking them all up in the .con file, you simply create all pieces of the vehicle in the same file. This allows you to place everything exactly where its supposed to go. No more guessing about positioning and rotation because you can see everything as you work.

Beta testers and fans are behind the project and have been working hard on their first big update for you today. If you think Battlefield 2 is basically like Desert Combat then think again, their website explains the difference.
It has been a long time since our last update, but we have some interesting stuff for you. SirFluffy and Hiddeninplainview have been working hard, so here they are.
Well, we're of course not done yet. We are still looking for modelers and skinners with the ability to unwrap the models. If you're interested please drop me or Demolition Man a pm.

Red Alert: A Path Beyond Update 7:40 PM | Mar 26 2005 | Rico | 12 Comments
Weapon Update: Soviet Parabombs
Slowly drifting down from the bomb bays of a Soviet Badger Bomber, a string of Parabombs will easily decimate ground targets in a series of mushrooming explosions-- if their target doesn't flee, that is. Although there's plenty of time for manned vehicles and infantry to escape, buildings won't be so lucky, and will generally be the preferred target (although a far-off bridge might be occasionally tempting to some).
Most likely, these will be deployed by the Soviet Commander when an Airfield is present and active.

Take a look here if you feel like commenting, or seeing the reference from Red Alert.
The large gaming site, GameSpy have released the first developer diary for Battlefield 2. It is written by DICE designer and associate producer James Salt, who gives behind-the-scenes look at what it takes. It is a total of 2 pages of which some parts are "humouristic". Here is a segment from the article.
An hour later we had a fix. But how do we get it to Germany? We can't send Jamil a full new build: the event is in an old aircraft hangar, in the middle of nowhere, with no Internet access. We only had time to send a few small files to EA's Germany Office. From there they'd be driven to the event.
To make matters a little trickier, its not just one file that needs tweaking: there's about 15 files in different directories! In the end Jamil had just one hour to put those files into the right places on 30+ machines. Thankfully, he made it and BF Con turned out fantastic. People from all over Europe spent three days playing everything Battlefield.
Pretty soon you won't need to go to an old aircraft hangar in Germany to play BF2. You'll be able to play the demo in your own home. Maybe you should ask yourself where you will be when the Battlefield 2 demo comes out. I would.
Check out the rest of it here.
Thanks to BF2 Community for the heads up.
