March 7, 2005 - It's already been announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment will be supporting the budding UMD video format with, among other titles, Resident Evil II: Apocalypse. It was also announced last week that Capcom has plans of its own for the UMD video format.
That question was answered today as Capcom Japan announced its first UMD video release. By some strange twist, the original Resident Evil movie will be released on UMD not via its video distributor, but via Capcom itself. The company plans on having the movie out in Japan on 4/13. Carrying a price tag of 2,990 yen (1,000 yen less than most other UMD video releases), the movie will feature English and Japanese dubs and subtitles. In Japan, it will go under its Japanese name of Biohazard.
The 4/13 release date will also see the release of Resident Evil II. Wonder which one will sell more...
Capcom has yet to announce the UMD version of Resident Evil for the American UMD market. It's expected that UMD video releases will have region protection, so those with American PSP systems will likely have difficulty playing back Japanese titles.
