BERJAYA In Other News... 12:03 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - in-house: in other news... BERJAYA (0 comments)
My secondary PC is about dead; the little bastard keeps crashing randomly in games. It's not adware/spyware related as I scan it daily, but a problem with the video card / memory being fried. Rather than throw more money into it (it's like 4 years old) I think I'm going to get a new set-up. I don't want to spend too much cash on it (>$1,000) since I have this lovely gaming rig I picked up not too long ago, but I need a semi-decent secondary bot PC since I like to dual box when I game (ie - Dark Age of Camelot / running two players at once) or even work on one system, and game on the other. I'm thinking a laptop or a mini-system like a Shuttle, but I'm not sure yet. Anyone have one of those Shuttle dealies? Looks like you can get a pretty nice rig for like $800-900 or so. Well, good for what I want to use it for.

Not really related to the above comments, but today's question is: What game released within the past couple years has had the best / most memorable ending?

Infinium Labs Remains Upbeat on Phantom 06:14 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: vaporware BERJAYA (3 comments)
Noticed over on Gamasutra that in a interview via the Tampa Bay Business Journal, Infinium CEO and president Timothy Roberts remains blissfully ignorant of the Phantom's impending demise:

Timothy Roberts remains upbeat about the future of the company's Phantom PC-based 'console', despite continued financial and publicity issues, criticizing what he calls the "yellow journalism" of disgruntled ex-employees or other journalistic parties.

Roberts commented in the interview, regarding pre-release press: "But for every naysayer we have there are 10 positive supporters. The problem is they aren't going to spend their days making positive Internet postings about us all day."

It's now estimated that the Phantom will be released before the end of 2005, but that this is contingent on a hoped for cash infusion. The company apparently needs $6 million to produce the 10,000 units needed for the initial launch, along with another $6 million for marketing. However, only 25 Phantom consoles are currently in existence.

Steam Update 05:51 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: action BERJAYA (2 comments)
It's a conspiracy by Valve to keep Peter Gabriel songs in my head:

Source Engine updates is available and will be applied automatically when Steam is restarted. The change includes:

Source Engine

  • Fixed server browser not displaying favorites in game
  • Just restart Steam to grab the latest update.

C&C; Generals Zero Hour Patch v1.03 04:44 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: real-time strategy BERJAYA (1 comment)
As promised by EA last week, the patch for Command & Conquer Zero Hour is available on their ftp. The patch notes can be found here. "This release addresses some crashes, the unfinished building exploit, several dozen balance issues in all factions, gameplay bugs and more, and also adds an unspecified number of new maps."

    Thanks 3D Gamers.

Ubisoft Enters Sports Arena With Vijay Singh 04:43 pm - Andrew Burnes - games: sports BERJAYA (4 comments)
Ubisoft has decided to go up against EA in the sports games arena with the announcement that they've purchased technology, tools and source code from Microsoft's NHL Rivals, NFL Fever, NBA Inside Drive, and MLB Inside Pitch, in addition to beginning development of a Vijay Singh golf game:

"There is still room for innovation in the sports genre and Ubisoft has some great ideas that we're looking forward to implementing," said Yves Guillemot, president and chief executive officer of Ubisoft. "We hope to not only offer sports fans games that have a unique flair and character, but also something that will take advantage of the fabulous capacities of current and next generation consoles."

"Ubisoft is doing an incredible job in bringing my style of golf to the world of gaming," said Vijay Singh. "I am excited to be teaming up with one of the most innovative and experienced gaming companies in the industry and look forward to a long and successful partnership."

ATI X800 and X850 XL Now in AGP 04:28 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - hardware: general news BERJAYA (4 comments)
ATI let us know that the AGP versions of the RADEON X800 XL and RADEON X850 XT is now shipping to stores. "The RADEON X800 XL and RADEON X850 products are perfect for gamers looking to upgrade their AGP systems to play the latest games," said Peter Edinger, Vice President and Managing Director, ATI Technologies (Europe) GmbH. "ATI will continue to deliver leading-edge graphics solutions like these for AGP as well as PCI Express to support the large install base." Here's the poop:

MARKHAM, ON/ Munich, Germany - February 28, 2005 - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX: ATY, NASDAQ: ATYT) today enhanced its family of graphics products for gamers and enthusiast PC users by announcing and shipping AGP versions of its popular RADEON X800 XL graphics cards and RADEON X850 XT graphics processors.

The RADEON X800, X800 XL and X850 Series visual processors originally debuted in December for PCI Express based systems. PCI Express is rapidly replacing AGP in new PC's as the primary interconnect technology between the main processor and the graphics subsystem. These new AGP variants will allow users who have not yet upgraded to PCI Express to experience the same great performance and image quality.

Next-gen Game Boy This Year? 04:09 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - consoles: general news BERJAYA (15 comments)
From the latest Game Over column: "While gamers have been expecting hardware launches from Sony (PSP) and Microsoft (XboxNext) this year, it now appears Nintendo may have a surprise up its sleeve. This week's "Game Over" column at CNN/Money reports the company may be planning to begin selling its next generation Game Boy before year's end. A formal announcement could come as early as 10 days from now at GDC."

SWAT 4 Preview 03:32 pm - Jeff Tom - games: action / strategy BERJAYA (0 comments)
RPGVault have slapped up a preview of SWAT 4, after getting some time with the preview build:

Prior to issuing any commands, can run through an optional training course where you can practice with various weapons, try out different grenades et al. After that, the single-player campaign proper begins with the briefing for the first mission; the initial paragraph of this article preview is a condensed version. As you might have figured out from the last sentence therein, the game differs from most tactical action titles in its emphasis on saving lives. This encompasses not only civilians who happen to find themselves in the proverbial "wrong place at the wrong time", but also the suspects. Lethal force is always the last resort, to be used only when the officers' lives or those of innocent bystanders are at stake, a focus reflected in much of the equipment.

The Sims 2: University Shipping 03:24 pm - Jeff Tom - games: simulation BERJAYA (0 comments)
PC.IGN have a news story up with word that The Sims 2: University, is shipping to stores across North America:

The expansion adds a new "young adult" life stage. In order for your Sims to move from childhood to adulthood, you're going to have to send them off to college. Your Sim will choose from 11 different majors, opening up four new career paths. Of course, college life won't be easy (or boring), whether your Sim lives in the dorms or breaks into a fraternity. The Sims 2 University features the parties, the complicated social connections, and all the barely-in-control craziness of going to school.

Xbox Next to Win Next-Gen Wars; CPU? 03:15 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - hardware: general news BERJAYA (40 comments)
Xbox fanbois rejoice, as the Xbox Next was the clear winner in last week's poll which asked who you thought will win the next-generation console war. Sure, we have no idea what the final hardware specs are; what games will be on them, or much else, but hey. :)

Speaking of hardware, this week's poll (which you can vote in on the right hand-side of the page) asks what's powering your PC.

Star Wars Republic Commando gets a nice reach-around from the G-Spot:

If Republic Commando got a 8.7 from Gamespot, then other sites should give it a score in the 9+ range (since they usually score stuff a good .5 below what other folks give). The vibe I got from the demo wasn't -that- great, but perhaps the full version is actually super cool.

In Other News... 12:07 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - in-house: in other news... BERJAYA (25 comments)
This week looks sort of interesting; I had no idea that Rebellion was actually releasing Judge Dredd vs Death, so here's to hoping it's as good as its earlier Aliens vs Predator title (yeah, it's been in development for some time). Gearbox's Brothers in Arms hits the street on the Xbox; usually this is a very bad sign for PC gamers when the console version is released first -- but Randy Pitchford said in our forums (with me broadly paraphrasing) it's not a crappy port job, so lets hope it's as good (or in the same neighborhood) as Call of Duty. After suffering through Men of Valor, I could really use a good war themed FPS. That could actually be a good rivalry in the making... Infinity Ward vs Gearbox fighting over the hearts and minds of WW2 gamers everywhere. There really is a lack of bitter rivals in today's gaming world; today's question is:

What is the best rivalry in gaming today?
