SWAT 4 Preview 05:20 pm

Another glowing preview of Irrational Games' SWAT 4 is online, this time thanks to the chaps at Gamesdomain:
All along, the SWAT series has tried to capture the dilemma the police face when it comes to using lethal force. Unlike the military, whose wartime job is to kill people and break things, the police have to tread more carefully. So when you're making a first-person shooter about the police, how do you present that?
SWAT 4 takes its cue from 1999's underrated SWAT 3, which put players in dynamic situations where they had to ask questions first and shoot later. Just as important as the fire button was the "order to comply" button, which demanded that a target drop its weapon.

In the upcoming game Germanic & Mongolian barbarians never destroyed the Roman Empire and now the Empire has flourished into a powerful futuristic civilization.

Xbox.IGN heads out with shotgun in hand in an attempt to catch some original game:
But depending on who you speak with, the videogame industry is either reaching the most impressive convergence of its entire 30-plus year old existence, or it's falling into a never-ending death spiral of sequel-heavy, rehashed, franchise dominated blocks of stinking cheese. If you look at EA, you see sequels, franchises and almost nothing new. If you look at Microsoft, Ubisoft, or even on a smaller level, Majesco, you see new and original games coming your way. I'm not talking pure quality here, I'm just talking original, non-licensed no franchise games.
Looking at this year's lineup on the Xbox, IGN has logged 248 games theoretically slated for 2005. Many of these will not make it to market. Many games already may have been killed. But a majority of them will ship to Xbox. Of these titles, 77 of them are original titles. When I mean original, I mean truly original, i.e., titles NOT based on a movie, TV show, book, comic book, sequel, or are part of any kind of franchise. That's a little less than 30%, or less than one-third, of all games slated for Xbox being original, meaning 171 are sequels, franchises, or based on some kind of license. Is this sickness? The state of things to come? Or simply the staus quo from the videogame industry?

Yahoo! is suing Xfire, the company co-founded by ex "pro gamer," Dennis 'Thresh' Fong. Yahoo! alleges in their lawsuit that the Xfire in-game instant messenger and server joining tool violates a patent they hold, a patent that just happened to be registered by ex-employee Chris Kirmse, now Vice President of Engineering at Xfire.
Read more on this potentially expensive case over at GameSpot.
Update: The Xfire website offers a brief statement:
Xfire does not infringe the Yahoo patent. We are very disappointed in the way this has been handled to date. We are hoping that this will be resolved shortly. We'd like to thank all 1 million Xfire users for their continued wonderful support.

I'm hooked on Winning Eleven 8 International at present as it's truly the best football game ever made, even if the repetitious commentary and dire fan sprites make me cringe. Some bastard from Ireland knocked Owen out of my international league for 33 weeks though :/
Best football game?
