Xbox 360? 02:16 am - Andrew Burnes - consoles: xbox next BERJAYA (14 comments)
Engadget has a source who reckons that the Xbox Next will be known as the Xbox 360:

Our source, who has worked on several projects involving the Xbox and the Xbox 360, has seen the proposed packaging and other design elements for the new console, and says that as of right now the console is being branded as the "Xbox 360." That's definitely not that first time we've heard that mentioned as one of the possible names for the next-generation Xbox; last year a marketing firm conducted a survey where they asked people whether they thought Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo N5 sounded more "next-gen" (apparently Microsoft was worried that calling their new console the "Xbox 2" would make it seem older or less "cutting-edge" than the PlayStation 3).

A circular console would be kinda neat.

So today is Super Bowl Sunday, but you're not meant to say Super Bowl on any commercial entity unless you're a sponsor as it, "lowers the value of the brand." Somehow I doubt Paul McCartney will be having his clothes ripped off to expose a saggy jewl-encrusted breast, but maybe his wife will do something with her leg...

Who will win the Super Bowl?

BERJAYA WarCraft III Weekly Bonus Map 05:25 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: real-time strategy BERJAYA (0 comments)
Blizzard's newest weekly WarCraft III bonus map is called Highperch, which is a medium sized map geared towards 2v2 or 3v3 players and comes in at 227K. Interested parties can snag that here.

SWAT 4 Preview 05:20 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: action BERJAYA (0 comments)
Another glowing preview of Irrational Games' SWAT 4 is online, this time thanks to the chaps at Gamesdomain:

All along, the SWAT series has tried to capture the dilemma the police face when it comes to using lethal force. Unlike the military, whose wartime job is to kill people and break things, the police have to tread more carefully. So when you're making a first-person shooter about the police, how do you present that?

SWAT 4 takes its cue from 1999's underrated SWAT 3, which put players in dynamic situations where they had to ask questions first and shoot later. Just as important as the fire button was the "order to comply" button, which demanded that a target drop its weapon.

Pirates! SecuROM Fix 05:15 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: action / adventure BERJAYA (2 comments)
Thanks to Blue's News for the link to a quick fix for Sid Meier's Pirates which is "a DVD version replacement addressing SecuROM copy protection issues." There's also a mirror at 3D Gamers.

Battlefield 2 Editing Tools Preview 05:11 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: action BERJAYA (1 comment)
Thanks to TotalBF2 for the word that EA released a preview of the editing tool to be used in DICE's forthcoming sequel. Included are a bunch of screen captures as well.

Imperator Preview 05:09 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: mmog BERJAYA (0 comments)
Imperator.Okratas took a peak at Mythic's upcoming Roman themed sci-fi MMOG:

How would our present probably look if the Roman realm had never fallen? The developers of Dark Ages of Camelot (Mythic Entertainment) take up this matter with its upcoming MMORPG, Imperator. In the upcoming game Germanic & Mongolian barbarians never destroyed the Roman Empire and now the Empire has flourished into a powerful futuristic civilization.

A Search For Original Games 01:21 am - Andrew Burnes - consoles: xbox BERJAYA (14 comments)
Xbox.IGN heads out with shotgun in hand in an attempt to catch some original game:

But depending on who you speak with, the videogame industry is either reaching the most impressive convergence of its entire 30-plus year old existence, or it's falling into a never-ending death spiral of sequel-heavy, rehashed, franchise dominated blocks of stinking cheese. If you look at EA, you see sequels, franchises and almost nothing new. If you look at Microsoft, Ubisoft, or even on a smaller level, Majesco, you see new and original games coming your way. I'm not talking pure quality here, I'm just talking original, non-licensed no franchise games.

Looking at this year's lineup on the Xbox, IGN has logged 248 games theoretically slated for 2005. Many of these will not make it to market. Many games already may have been killed. But a majority of them will ship to Xbox. Of these titles, 77 of them are original titles. When I mean original, I mean truly original, i.e., titles NOT based on a movie, TV show, book, comic book, sequel, or are part of any kind of franchise. That's a little less than 30%, or less than one-third, of all games slated for Xbox being original, meaning 171 are sequels, franchises, or based on some kind of license. Is this sickness? The state of things to come? Or simply the staus quo from the videogame industry?

Thresh Fong's Xfire Sued By Yahoo! 01:13 am - Andrew Burnes - games: general news BERJAYA (6 comments)
Yahoo! is suing Xfire, the company co-founded by ex "pro gamer," Dennis 'Thresh' Fong. Yahoo! alleges in their lawsuit that the Xfire in-game instant messenger and server joining tool violates a patent they hold, a patent that just happened to be registered by ex-employee Chris Kirmse, now Vice President of Engineering at Xfire.

Read more on this potentially expensive case over at GameSpot.

Update: The Xfire website offers a brief statement:

Xfire does not infringe the Yahoo patent. We are very disappointed in the way this has been handled to date. We are hoping that this will be resolved shortly. We'd like to thank all 1 million Xfire users for their continued wonderful support.

I'm hooked on Winning Eleven 8 International at present as it's truly the best football game ever made, even if the repetitious commentary and dire fan sprites make me cringe. Some bastard from Ireland knocked Owen out of my international league for 33 weeks though :/

Best football game?
