A Message from The Dev Team
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
The following was posted on the POL site.

The development team is currently programming and testing numerous new features that will be added to the next major version update. At this time, updates are tentatively scheduled for late February and late April. In addition, the team is working on exciting new content for release in the near future. When dates for the aforementioned downloads have been set, they will be made available to the public via announcements on this page.

Starting this year, the Developers' Room will no longer contain announcements regarding version updates. However, articles regarding all upcoming features can be found right here on the official FINAL FANTASY XI homepage. In addition to update information, we will also be expanding the Topics section to include everything from general information and event notices to suggestions brought up by you, the players!

Vana'diel is ever changing, and it is our job to keep you up to speed. We will continually update this page so you can stay on top of what's in store for the future!
Also there was another note there with a link showing off some of the new equipment you'll be able to get in the upcoming major patch. You can check out those images right here.

  More New Story Goodness
Print News | Mail News
We've got a good batch of new story updates for today. First off is the next chapter in Brin's Eternal Mysteries series, Ch. 5. Here's a snippet:

Windurst.a place of magic and wonder. So many mysteries have been uncovered here with many more yet to be known of. It was here that Brin met up with Vide. Already, Brin had been back to San dOria to deliver the stone. The blacksmith was so thankful that he gave Brin a weapon of days long past. A most powerful lance known as Perigine. It was this lance that now stayed upon Brins back.

Next up is Chapter 8 of Blood Red Poet's series, entitled Brothers. Here's a preview:

The night was at a perfect still. Ghelsbas rocky exterior was only bothered by a few chilling gusts of wind. Such breeze gently shook the door of an Orcish hut. A large house with red decorations, drapes and banners, showing it was apart of the empire. In that hut, on its dirt floor, Auricant laid unconscious. His face was stained with his own blood. An oversized copper ring wrapped loosely around his leg. His swords blade laid in pieces, scattered on the ground. The starry night was calm in this part of Ronfaure but not in another.

Lastly, we have the second chapter of Raiden's series, Chronicles of Vana'diel, called Outnumbered and Out of Luck?. Here's a piece:

In bastok market there was a big crowd gathering near the presidents office because of the flare. Iron Eater and president Karst walked out of his office and told everyone they do not know why the flare was launched. Karst, I will go and see what is going on in San Doria and report back said Iron Eater.

The beastmen army was now insight of San Doria. The four were a bit scared but they stayed strong. A flash of lightning struck a near by tree, a fire had broken out. The beastmen army roared with excitement. The fire didnt stay lit for long, as it started raining. It was the start of an omen. Chewy stay here with Rygar and Melkor. Chewy nodded and Raiden ran up the city wall and jumped over into the city.

Enjoy all!

  Square-Enix News
[Post A Comment] - Print News | Mail News
Seeing as how there hasn't been much FFXI news lately, I figure I'd mention a few tid bits I've noticed for other Square-Enix related games.

Over on PS2 IGN they mention something about a "Code Age Project" which was released with Dragon Quest VIII in Japan. It seems to be some sort of manga, for those of you out there interested. For more details you can read up on that article right here.

Also, a new review of the new Fullmetal Alchemist game was put up. Here's a quote.

January 6, 2005 - Last year was the most prolific role-playing season I've ever seen. Between the traditional turn-based stuff, the tactics-style strategy goodness, and the action-oriented hack and slash, there were almost two-dozen RPGs for the PlayStation 2. That's a lot. Remarkably, 2005 looks like it could be even better with Suikoden IV, Xenosaga II, and Return to Arms joining Square Enix's biggest turn of the generation. After all, in a year that will see Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy XII, and Dragon Quest VIII all hit the system before the end of December, you've got yourself quite a metaphorical earthquake.
You can read the rest of the review right here.

Lastly, I spotted over on RPGamer some news about Radiata Stories. It seems some new info on races in the game was released, and they had someone translate the info. If you'd like to learn more, you can read the translation right here.

  Stories Strike Again
Print News | Mail News
Two new goodies for you all today. First up, Jacquie comes back with another powerful piece for her column, the Angel Walker. This one is entitled Full Time Worker vs. Full Time Player. Here's a snippet:

The basic idea of the disclaimer that everyone reads before you enter the world of vana'diel makes the point not to let the game affect your life, your friends and your work. The problem with this is the fact that majority of the quests, missions and other such tasks require amounts of hours that not everyone can accommodate to.

The second treat for today is yet another addition to Alacer's growing work, The Last Tavnasian. The sixth installment is here, called The Party. Here's a preview:

Beads of sweat rolled down his head. His blanket thrown on the ground in frustration. Alacer (our protagonist samurai) rolled wildly in his bed unable to fall asleep. His mind was bothered by something he knew not of. But something was definitely wrong. Something about the city. There was something wrong.

Enjoy all!

For today we have Chapter Five of Alacer's series, The Last Tavnasian. This one is called The Battle Of Zegham Hill. Here's a preview:

I unsheathed my blade and ran at the enemy. Lifting my blade high in the air I flew forward. The Quadav were getting closer by the second, I was able to make out their ugly faces not long afterwards. The officer was running beside me, brandishing a long spear.

We would like to wish everyone great fortune and prosperity for the year ahead!

Presently, a family of mythical birds is visiting Vana'diel. According to folklore, these avians will reward those who make them an offering. If you wish to learn your fortune for this year, try trading the birds an item and see what happens!

This feathered family will be in Vana'diel from December 31, 7:00 (PST) to January 9, 19:00 (PST).

Looks like we're celebrating the Year of the Rooster the same way as the Year of the Monkey.... who else can't wait until the next Year of the Dragon? ;)

  Hero of Bastok: Chapter 22
Print News | Mail News
Okay, so with the holidays and everything I didn't have time to finish this by Christmas. Ah well, consider this a late Christmas gift from me to all you readers out there. I present Chapter 22 of Hero of Bastok. This one's called The Bloodlust. Here's a preview, since that title probably has you wondering:

Vyn lay awake in his bed, trying hard not to fall asleep. Ever since his battle with Zeid, the nightmare that signified the bloodlusts awakening had become more intense and more numerous. There were some nights where hed wake up screaming in despair and pain, the images hed seen having been exceptionally powerful. Other nights he couldnt even get to sleep; the nightmare would assault him the moment his eyes closed. He was starting to think Cait had been too optimistic. He didnt think hed be able to continue on like this. Zeid he muttered to the ceiling. Was this how it felt for you? Is this why you wanted to be free so badly? In the darkness, he could almost picture his mentor nodding to him.

Enjoy everyone, and a very happy New Year to you all!

  After-Holiday Catch-Up
Print News | Mail News
The holidays are over, which means I actually have time now to catch up. For today we have two new items: The first is Chapter 7 of Blood Red Poet's series, The Vana'diel Tragedy. This one's called A Traitor With Blue Eyes. Here's a snippet:

The great bane will devour the fair land of Vanadiel.
The ancient seal will be broken, awakening nightmares of the ages past.
The blood of the innocents will soak the earth, and the world will fall into fear and despair.
But as one bright star shines through the clouds at night
And as one song rings clear above the roar of the beasts
We hold one in these darkest of times.
That they will come, with the wisdom of ages and the strength of thousands, to deliver us from our plight.

We await the awakening of the Warriors of the Crystal.

-Prayer with unknown, ancient origins.

Our other story for today is a brand new submission, entitled Crimson Warlock, written by Naethan. His first chapter is called Prelude, and here's a small preview:

Making his way through North Gustaberg toward the great city of Bastok, Nathanael and his men pushed their already battle weary bodies back to the city. The day spent mostly in combat had proved to be beneficial in holding back the Quadav hordes that had threathened the city about a week passed. With more than fifthteen soilders slain by the oncoming and seemingless unending Quadav hordes Nathanael considered it but a small loss considering the future deaths that would have occurred within the city had he and his party never attacked the Quadav. A small loss indeed he thought, leading the hundreds of men remaining back to town, small loss indeed.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday!

  Corsage: Chapter Five
Print News | Mail News
See, I told you I was serious. For your viewing pleasure, it's Chapter Five of Corsage, entitled Underlying Treachery. Here's a preview:

The camp was silent and motionless. Chores and other daily activities had been puff off, delayed, or abandoned all together. Guard duties were either deserted or ignored. All of the Exiles stood hushed and quiet, gathered in the center of the camp. Frozen Winter stood in the midst of this group, where he was as close as he could manage to the Mithra that was sitting hunched over at a table.

Normally, the huge Galka would have flown into a violent rage if even one of the Exiles was caught shirking off guard duty. Right now, though, he was too memorized by the Mithra at the table. Or, more specifically, by the large, transparent globe the Mithra was operating.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Redline: Chapter 3
Print News | Mail News
Tis the season for everything to hit you at once...Anyway, for today Bastianjaehoon gives us Chapter 3 of his series, Redline. This chapter's entitled Meldng Bonds. Here's a small preview:

"Ok you worthless slobs, you are here for one reason and one reason only! That reason is to serve and protect your country to the best of your ability." A hume shouted as he walked along a line of various adventurers. "You should give one hundred percent and then some to complete your assigned task, what ever it may be. I don't care if it's killing of Quadavs, standing guard at a post in a remote area, or even sanitizing a latrine. Follow your orders and you will survive." The hume continued to pace up and down the then line of candidates hoping to become the new batch of Iron Musketeers of Bastok. "I will now let a highly decorated Musketeer have the floor, his name is Sir Naji and you will address him as such. Unit, attention!" The already attentive adventurers snapped to an erect stance to show the proper respect for the up coming individual.

More to come tomorrow! ...No, seriously this time.
