Napoleon Fanboys Go BOOM!

Who is this guy,Peter Schorn, and why are you letting him write for your awesome site? I think he's out of touch with who actually visits "ign.com". Napoleon Dynamite might not be the funniest movie of all time, but it is definitely better than what this guy says about it. I think that Peter's just letting out some unresolved teenage anger issues because he realizes that even though Napoleon is the epitome of an outcast, he's still like "an infinity" times cooler than Peter is. The rest of your site ROCKS!

-- Britt

I was blown away at your poor score for this movie. It is better than 90% of the high budget films that is released in the theaters! If you do not think this movie is funny than you have a poor sense of humor.Very dissappointed with this, I will forever question your reviews for now on!!

-- Lee

When choosing an individual to review a comedy dvd, why not get someone that actually has a sense of humor.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the funniest movies I've EVER seen. My family (Me 39, Wife 36, kids 15, 13) all think so. Those I know of varying age, sex, etc. who have seen it think so. The one person I know who doesn't like it has the personality of Summer's boyfriend. Peter Schorn just doesn't get it.

-- James

I just finished reading your review of Napoleon Dynamite and while I will say most of the scores seemed accurate, the movie score is way off. Whoever reviewed this must have just passsed it off without actually paying attention, because if he (or she) had actually taken the time to watch it for what it is the movie would be recognized as a classic. I'm not a Nerd, I'm actually on the farthest end from that, but I love this movie because its original, different, and its just funny as hell. I think your DVD review staff should take a look at ALL the factors of the actual movie before passing it off as a film only "nerds" would like.

Thanks,
-- Kliph

I usually agree with all of your reviews, but I must say I was quit upset to read your Napoleon Dynamite review. That film has a hardcore fanbase behind it, so in stating that the film isn't funny at all is not true. I just think it's not fair to say it is down-right not funny, when many, many people think it is. I agree that the special features are ot the best, but the film is a nice indie film that all can enjoy.

These are the letters that I could print. The rest were unprintable on this site. And if you're going to attack me or one of my writers, I'd advise editing the letter, because I will run it as sent.

In case you forgot the name, it's IGN DVD. That means a DVD review, of which the movie is just a part of it. So get over yourselves if a reviewer doesn't like your favorite movie. He nailed the audio, video and extras, which is my primary concern.

As for the movie, Peter isn't alone in his view. That movie was a colossal snore, ten minutes of dull followed by a good laugh, then ten more minutes of bore. Napoleon isn't a "loveable loser," he's just a plain old loser and so is the rest of the cast. The dialogue isn't funny and most of the movie is without purpose. It's dull. When the letters started coming in, I asked FilmForce's Jeff Otto, with whom I share an office, for his thoughts, and he said the same thing. It's occasionally funny with a lot of boring stretches.

On The Other Side of The Coin...

I just want to say how glad I am that someone else knows that Napoleon Dynamite is a stupid movie. One laugh here or there, but that's it. I can't tell you how many people worship this movie and quote it all the time. It's nice to hear from someone that has a matching opinion.

-- Aaron

It really is overrated, isn't it?

-- Andy

DTS By Choice?

First off, I would just like to say I love your site. I check it daily. I notice a lot of people out there prefer DTS to Dolby Digital. I am one of those people. I was just curious to who has the final say on which DVD gets the DTS treatment. Is it the director, producer or Company? I notice that some companies such as Dreamworks and Universal usually have DTS while others like Warner Bros. and Sony rarely have them. So who gets to decide?

-- Andrew

It varies, really. Universal uses it the most because it's an investor in the company, as is Steven Spielberg, who is joined at the hip to Universal. So of course they will use their "own" product. I think in the end it's almost always a space decision. DTS takes up a lot of room, and if they want to make a single-disc release, you can almost rest assured there will be little to no extras, unless the movie is short. If the film has lots of extras and will be a two-disc release, some studios will use it. Put it this way; someone from Sony told me that when they move to Blu-ray, they expect DTS to be a standard. That's possible when you jump from 9.4GB of space to 50GB.

-- Andy

Blu-ray/HD on a Tube

On a regular TV, would I notice much of a difference from a regular DVD to a HD-DVD or a Blu-Ray movie?

-- John

Yes and no. A 4:3 CRT tube has a max resolution of 480 lines, so you aren't going to get the 1080 resolution of HD/BD discs. On the other hand, the movies will be mastered in 1920 high definition, so it could translate to better performance, even on a dumbed down TV.

-- Andy

Some Screens Just Don't Show The Truth

Read with interest your review of Ghost in the Shell SE.

Since I have the original edition, the only reason for me to get the SE would be the new transfer (I don't care much for extras) but try as I might, I just can't see any bit of difference between the screen shots in your review. Colors, etc, everything looks exactly the same. Are you sure there wasn't some kind of mix up? You say in the review the transfer is muc better, so I'm just wonderin'... (if anything, one of the screenshots for the original transfer looks better, slightly sharper than the new one - the one where the girl lands on the
rooftop)

I'm actually questioning whether this is a new transfer. My edition says about the same thing as the SE on the jacket, i.e. 'digitally remastered' or something to that extent. There's really nothing on the SE's jacket to indicate that it is a *new* transfer.

-- David

It's definitely a new transfer. A friend who is a fan of the films came by my place, and the two of us watched both movies. The difference was obvious, both in sound and video. Some times the screen grabs just can't show the difference, but it was apparent on my projection TV.

You Must Be New Here

Whoever wrote the photo captions on the otherwise well written article on the new Naussicaa DVD should be shown the door. I'd like to say should be shot but that's a little serious. Just very insulting to the content and the readers; all of whom probably cherish this masterpiece. Go back to high school; maybe someone there will snicker at your lame-ass comments. Or here's an idea: grow up.

-- Kim

Welcome to IGN DVD. You'll get used to the captions.

Alien vs. Interlacing

I just watched the widescreen version of Alien vs. Predator last night, and I was a little disappointed to notice all the interlacing errors in the additional scenes at the beginning of the film. It was so bad that it reminded me of the Monty Python and the Meaning of Life DVD that needed to be replaced for people with progressive-scan DVD players. However, after that initial scene, the problem seemed to go away. My question is why you didn't say anything about it in your review as it is readily apparent to even the most untrained eye, and is there any chance Fox will fix the problem or offer replacement DVDs to those who request it?

-- Mike

I saw no problems and checked it on two systems. Have you tried it on another system or asked someone else who has the disc? The new footage to the film is right at the beginning, so I can see a problem being there if anywhere. But as I said, no problems manifested on my disc.

-- Andy

Happy Now?

Why is your DVD mailbox not updated more often? If you want, I will do it for you, geez... Get on the ball or you shall be smited and scoffed at. I spit, stomp, and curse your name as I walk away in disgust. You have been scorned.

P.S. Solid site by the way, other than the MAILBOX thing... grr..

-- Scott

Have to admit I'm a slacker on these, but I see more value in reviews. If you all feel differently, well, say so.

-- Andy
