The official MutableRealms/Wish web site has posted up word that when the beta version of their upcoming fantasy MMORPG starts on Saturday, Jan. 1, only a select and random number of people will be able to access the beta at first, with more accounts becoming active every day thereafter. According to the web site, "We require this transition period to better configure our one-world server. By granting access to the beta test in stages, we can better allocate resources where they are required." |

This Wall Street Journal article takes a look at what could be a busy year for company takeovers for the video and PC game industry in 2005. The article reveals that Walt Disney is looking at buying game companies and a New York based company named IAC/InterActiveCorp (headed up by former TV network head Barry Diller) tried to buy Activision several months ago, although those talks did not conclude in a deal. |

Brian Green - The game that sticks with me most is Katamari Damacy for the PS2. The game focused on primary fun idea, and it was a great game. I wish it were a bit longer, of course, but I had a blast playing it. (Read More) |

Anatoly Subbotin - One of those games was Nitro Family. Im a big Serious Sam fan and I was awaiting something similar from this title, but unfortunately it turned out to be simply horrible. Just take Serious Sam, make it look worse, remove all interactivity, reduce the animation and texture quality and youll get a dull and absolutely uninteresting game. Not the game I wanted to play. HomeLAN - What video or PC game that was released in 2004 that you played was the most disappointing and why?
Piotr Panasewicz - Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed by Doom 3. The game was marketed as a breakthrough in the genre, and the end-result was at best mediocre. It was basically the same series of repeating elements, rooms and monsters, all within the age-old scheme: you open a door, kill a couple of monsters, go on farther, some new monsters appear, you kill them and so on. So monotonous! Not to mention that playing the game, you can quickly develop at least a mild case of claustrophobia... Besides the graphics, nothing in particular managed to surprise me about this title. (Read More) |

That game just sucked me right in, and I think it kept me going because it's very challenging without ever getting frustrating. There's a lot you can do in the game, and there are so many different ways of tackling a mission... Nearly every time you play it, something unexpected happens. (Read More) |

This game is the spiritual successor of System Shock 2, a game that was truly scary and put me in the game atmosphere like never before. There are so many moments, visuals and sounds from System Shock 2 that sticks out in my mind. Im haunted by Shodan and the way it manipulated me as I played through the game. Weve been working diligently on it over this past year, so it will be a sheer joy to see it on the shelves for the 2005 holiday season. Already we are having fun playing it, and I expect it to become even more fun as 2005 progresses. Joe Bostic (who co-created the Command & Conquer series) is the visionary for it, and hes taking it in a great direction. With all the long hours we have devoted to it, I have to say that it is the game I am most looking forward to seeing released.

In fact, I recommend ESPN NFL 2K5 for anybody who knows football. If we are talking sheer disappointment, perhaps Jet Li: Rise to Honor takes the cake. It wasnt the worst game of the year. Top 10 Things Gamers Can Do Between Christmas And New Year's

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day can be a fun time for gamers, as some of them have the entire week off to play nothing but gamers. However, there may be other things gamers can do to spend the time and HomeLAN has its latest top 10 list devoted to those activities:
10. Measure the new PS2 design; marvel at how they cramed all that tech in one tiny box.
9. Think about making mods for games and discover yet again that you are not skilled enough.
8. Hit EBGames or GameStop to get rid of your grandmother's Christmas gift of the Xbox version of Finding Nemo.
7. Fight people at EBGames or GameStop for their last Nintendo DS in their store.
6. Realise that the Nintendo DS is perhaps not the best purchase to make; start saving up for a Sony PSP.
5. Start a countdown until the official release of the Xbox 2.
4. Start a countdown until the next major ATI-NVIDIA graphics card.
3. Start a countdown until you get a clue that countdowns don't solve your problem.
2. Prepare for New Year's Eve by playing Half-Life 2 with a party hat.
And the number one thing gamers can do between Christmas and New Year's Day:
1. Resolve that for 2005 that you won't spend as much time playing games..and then break it on New Year's Day: |

BTW, Jack will also be taking this week off from his Sunday Matinee column. He will return next week.
Interesting Link of the Day:Age of Apocalypse returns. This was, without a doubt, the worst X-Men storyline ever made..why they are returning to this timeline is a mystery to me. |

While their source is unnamed, Team Xbox is reporting that there are plans to release an updated version of the hit Bungie-Microsoft first person shooter sequel Halo 2 for the still unofficially announced Xbox 2 console. According to the article, "Halo 2.5" will have improved graphics over the original as well as unspecified extras (although the article speculates it could things like online co-op play and the conclusion to the rather abupt ending for Halo 2) and that it will come preloaded with the optional (and for now speculative) hard drive for Xbox 2. Natually, it's good to treat this as rumor until the official word is announced. |

Some Quickie DVD Reviews

The folks over at Special Ops Media sent over a couple of DVD sets to me and well, it would be rude not to review them, especially since I actually liked both sets..so, while this is different than the normal game oriented stuff we do, it is Christmas, so let's have some fun
The Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection: Volume 6
This is the latest four disk collection of the classic TV series from Rhino Media and its an excellent one with three full movies from the Joel Hodgson era (Attack of the Giant Leeches, Gunslinger and Teenagers From Outer Space) as well as a collection of short subjects (my personal favorite is Mr. B Natural, which is about a woman who poses, Peter Pan like, as a man to teach a kid about music). Its all about the funny here, with the Invention Exchange, TVs Frank, the bots and lots and lots of one-liners at some of the worst pieces of celluloid ever produced. With the show now permanently off the air, the DVD releases may be the only way MST3K will ever be seen by anyone again and this latest collection is an excellent way to introduce someone new to this show..
Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century: The Complete Series
Heres a show from my youth that I look back at fondly. The latest (and so far last) incarnation of the classic sci-fi hero was this two season Universal-NBC show (1979-1981) starring Gil Gerard as the astronaut who gets himself frozen in is spaceship in 1987 (heh) and then gets thawed out 500 years later. This 5-disk set contains both the first fun and campy year of the show where Buck and his comrades Wilma Deering (Erin Gray), Dr. Huer (Tim OConnor) and of course the really annoying little robot (but in a good way) Twiki (voice by the cartoon voice genius Mel Blanc) faced off against a space vampire, Tigerman and Jack Palance, among others. These episodes actually hold up well on DVD and are fun to watch. Not so much for the brief and final second season, however, which is also included here and which tried to turn Buck Rodgers into a serious Star Trek-like show but only made it look horrible in comparison to the light and humorous tone the first season had. While there are no extras in this DVD set (it would have been great to hear Gerald, Gray and OConnor chat in a commentary track..bummer) this set does include the two hour pilot as it was first shown as a theatrical feature and which is a tad more adult in nature (it was changed for subsequent TV showings and toned down). Whether you get this set depends a lot on your age, I think, but for fans of the show this is most likely the only way it will ever show up on DVD so for them its a must buy. |
