Buying Earth

I'll still play ESPN (?)FL 2k6

Monavin McDab throws to Orell Towens! Touchdown SCHMILLIDELPHIA BEAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!

rock on ESPN 2k6... Rock on...

-- Kevin

That's what I'm talking about, Keving. Better yet, why don't other companies go for the Mutant League? Oh right! EA owns that, too. Well, there's always the World League, the XFL, and Arena Football... Yup, football fans are hosed.

It's not like Madden is a bad product, it's just that we gamers need some competition. Heck, EA needs some competition. Every Madden developer I've ever spoken to has always appreciated the efforts of Microsoft, Visual Concepts, Midway, and even Acclaim (well, maybe not Acclaim). Anyway, without that level of competition EA may find itself strapped to come up with new ideas to improve upon its franchises. Then again, NASCAR and FIFA don't seem to be suffering any due to a lack of competition, so maybe everything will be fine after all.

Slim Slapping

Is it just me or was the slim PS2 a slap in the face to everyone that bought a HDD? I mean they have no games that support the HDD hardly and now the bring out a PS2 that cant have one in it? Whats up with that?

-- Great One

I don't know, Great One. I think the HDD itself was a slap to the face. Sony never really knew what to do with the bloody thing and no third party ever wanted to spend the time and money required to support a peripheral that Sony itself wasn't inclined to stand behind. When I think about it, the only purpose the HDD ever served admirably was to facilitate the operation of Final Fantasy XI. After that it's pretty much a way to make your PS2 fatter and heavier. The Slim design is just trying to carry on past its chunky high school days, you know? It's that don't look back, keep moving forward, la-la-la, water under the bridge style.

The real slap in the face comes from Nintendo. That company first required gamers to purchase crappy Nintendo branded component video cables from Nintendo itself just to get progressive scan games. Now it has pulled all component video support out of its newer GameCubes and games. That's a slap to the face, a punch to the junk, and an elbow to the base of the skull. It's like telling every gamer who prefers a high quality audio / video experience to go eff himself because the Big N just doesn't give a damn about you. Unbelievable. That kind of move really infuriates me.

Welcome to Civilization

Do you know where I can purchase a sharkport in Nova Scotia Canada

-- Randy

Man, I don't even know what a Nobla Scanotia Canadia is. But I'll tell you, if I lived in some godforsaken wasteland I'd look online for products I wanted delivered to me. I mean, you aren't going to find a SharkPort in the middle of some random whale, so you might as well stop looking there, you know?

p.s. WTF?

-- Ivan

Product Lines

Hi, do you know when and if sims 2 will be released on PS2?? Thankyou and have a great Christmas and New Year!!

-- Elissa

Not going to happen. EA really wants to differentiate the PC and console brands, which is why we got The Urbz, a spin-off of the original. EA wants two separate lines, not ports.

Doug of the Day

Heard around IGN... Our own Ed Lewis points out that the finer points of Doug probably aren't more valuable than editorial standards, but they can certainly be funnier.

Doug Perry: Hahaha! They claim to be a leading source of unbiased gaming information! Hahaha!

Ed Lewis: Ugh... And we're a leading source of Doug.

I'd like to see some competitor try and match the amount of Doug that we offer. Not with a thousand monkeys could they do this. It is folly.

Console to Monitor

Old buddy, I need your help for a moment. I know that I can ask you this because, since I've been stalk- I mean reading your bag since you started it on IGN PC, I know you've answered this question before.

Why don't I find the mailbag where you answered it then? Because you've HUNDREDS of these and there are WAY too many for me to do that.

Anyway, is there a nicely affordable and sexy way to hook a console to a PC monitor? Most of the items I've found online cost a damn lot, and their functionality seems somewhat dubious. So come on, help your old buddy out.

-- Grasilich

Yar! Der be dis Key Digatal model of Complonent Vidio to VGA monitor connect. I no test face on model personal, but suspect me of it working righteous unto your damnation. Check it to your dog, lest ye be smoten on the mountainous ruination of blaspheme!

If more information ye trifle be searching to your quest. Look past the Blue Waterfall of flavor and into the eyes of the third dimension. Here ye can find treasure in words, details of ages, and sights of the VGA. Blargy!

I am the Doug! Fear not you be bested by my writing of power and prominostros.

Till Next Time

Well folks... Everyone's talking about EA, except for me. I'm talking about The Return of the King extended edition. But in regards to EA's exclusive acquisition of the NFL license, most people are either uproarious or stupefied. Me? I'm in the, "Figured it'd happen earlier, actually" camp.

Thing is, this kind of deal is normal for a company makes around four freaking billion freaking dollars a year. I'd wager that MLBPA, MLB, NHL, NHLPA, NBA, and NBAPA offers have already been made. And why not? Domination is good business, usually.

Still, I find myself more concerned with the muster of Rohan.

"Forth and fear no darkness! Arise! Arise, Riders of Thoden! Spears shall be shaken -- shields shall be splintered on this, a sword day! A red day ere the sun rises! Ride now... Ride now! RIDE! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! RIDE! Ride to death! Ride to Gondor! Forth, eorlingas!"

Oh f*** yeah. Football what?
