Mailbag 12.03.04

Let the inane and otherworldly questions begin.

True Crime 2
True Crime 2....When? So what have you heard about this game? The first was my favorite xbox game, better IMO than GTA VC and GTA 3. It was announced a while back, then nothing. Please tell me this game hasnt been cancelled...Thanks, BigMike

While Activision has official announced the sequel, it hasn't announced the date. So, it's a guessing game. My guess? If it's not coming this spring, then I'd say fall 2005 for Xbox, PS2 and Cube.

Off-line Patch
Doug: Any further word on how non-Live users can get the HDTV patch/update for Halo 2? I'm a 34 year old father of 3 who doesn't have enough available time to make Live a worthwhile investment. However, I'd still like to be able to play Halo 2 on my 55" HDTV. Any suggestions?

Yeah, check this article we published November 17. There are a few ways around it.

HaloMaps.org
HaloMaps.Org is hosting a machinima contest themed around Halo CE: http://www.halomaps.org.

What the hell, right? You know you're all stuck on Legendary anyway.

Backward Compatible
As my college dorm roomate is graduating in May, I will soon not have access to an XBox that I can play at anytime I want. So, I am looking to buy an XBox and have a question about XBox Next. Will the XBox Next be backwards capable with the XBox games, or will I have to get an XBox as well? I wouldn't mind waiting a few months for the XBox Next to come out if it were backwards capable. I just don't want to buy an XBox in May only to find out that the XBox Next is backwards capable and I would have wasted $150.

We don't know, and it may be safe to say that Microsoft doesn't know. So, sorry buddy, cannot answer that. But I will say this: While backward compatibility initially seems like a great idea as a selling point, it's not necessarily all that useful in the long run, and I NEVER used it to play old PlayStation games. So, think about that, and ask some of your PS2 friends what their tendencies were like. But if you can only buy one system, that's a different matter. Ask yourself these questions: You want to play games now, or wait a year? You want to be the first on the new system? Or wait some time? If you just want to play good Xbox games, then go buy an Xbox now. If you want to wait, I suspect the Xbox will descend in price come next fall or even next spring, giving way to the new system's likely $299.99 price.
