The BankAmericard was launched by Bank of America in 1958.

This logo was derived from an acceptance mark introduced in late 1959. The card was also licensed to banks in other countries, with each using localized brand names. In 1966, it was launched in the UK as Barclaycard, 1967 in France as Carte Bleue, in 1968 in Canada as Chargex, and in 1971 in Brazil as Cartão Elo.

Bank of America relinquished control of the system in 1970 to a new firm known as National BankAmericard Inc. (NBI). International operations were assumed by the International Bankcard Company (IBANCO) in 1974.

On December 2, 1976, it was announced that all BankAmericard licensees would be united under the new Visa brand, with a two-year rollout of the new name beginning in March 1977. The design of the cards was first shown to the public on December 31, 1976. NBI and IBANCO would become Visa USA Inc. and Visa International soon afterwards.
