Be Worthy: A Campaign for Deerfield

Be Worthy: A Campaign for Deerfield is an invitation to Deerfield’s global community to renew the promise that has defined this school for more than two centuries: that each generation enriches the Academy for the next, leaving Deerfield stronger, more deeply Deerfield, and more worthy than they found it.

Be Worthy is a call to honor the obligations at the heart of our school’s identity: to extend opportunity to those who need it most, to strengthen the bonds of a community unlike any other, and to deepen a culture of rigorous, independent thought that inspires students to lead across differences and to live lives of engaged and generous citizenship.

“Great schools know who they are. They are confident in their ethos and values. They build outward from their defining strengths and distinctive histories. They are also agile, dynamic, open to change, and attentive to future opportunity.”

“‘Be worthy’ suggests a challenge or expectation: don’t just claim it, demonstrate it, live up to it.”

Being Worthy at Deerfield means using our gifts and opportunities in service of something larger than ourselves. In my work as an Arabic teacher, and in supporting international students and those in my dorm, it means helping young people grow not only in knowledge, but in empathy, curiosity, courage, and a sense of responsibility to the wider world.”

“At Deerfield, academic excellence, joy, and student flourishing are not competing aims—they reinforce one another. Here, young people thrive in a culture of optimism and challenge, where adults model qualities of resilience, character, and compassion.”

“Right away, I was struck by the genuineness of students’ enthusiasm for learning and wanting to do well,” Sheryl recalls. Her colleagues were also a revelation. “During hard times, they surrounded me in ways that I hadn’t anticipated, they would become my community and some of my best friends.”

“I came to Deerfield managing expectations. I leave believing I can exceed them, and that I am worthy of all this place has made possible.”
