I had no idea that you could NEVER use HDMI
I bit the bullet and finally bought one of these. I have wanted one FOR YEARS. And after my 2016 Apple Thunderbolt display finally kicked the bucket after almost a decade, I decided to finally purchase this new one. I have to say, i'm EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. I wish I had did more research before purchasing. I hope this review helps someone else who is looking to purchase. I had no idea that you would lose the option of EVER using HDMI or any other display protocol (even with an adapter) EVER again with this display. This display has one single incoming port, nothing else. The display REQUIRES a mac product, and only supports Thunderbolt Display protocol. That is SO limiting. Idk, maybe not for some. But for me, it definitely was. Like I just bought a $1500 premium device and it can't even do what every other display on the market can do? No HDMI? No DisplayPort? Apparently this is by-design but to me, Serious design flaw! To add insult to injury, Apple only gives you a 2-3 foot thunderbolt display cable in the box! It’s ridiculously short. Your Mac has to be like legit right on top of the display for it to reach. And want to know how much a 6 foot cable is from Apple? $160 extra dollars!! Of course it is!! When I saw that on top of already spending $1500 for the display. I was pretty shocked, annoyed, disappointed but not surprised. I found a knock-off brand on Amazon for half the price. But just so you know, not any thunderbolt cable will do! It needs to be a cable with INTEL Display protocol support. So those other thunderbolt 4/5 high speed cables you have laying around? They won’t work. The only benefit with this display is the brightness. The nits level and glass covering on the screen is unmatched in quality by any other monitor brand. That is what truly sets it apart. It's incredibly bright, crisp, clear. I mean, you absolutely do get what you pay for when it comes to picture quality. That cannot be attested. TL;DR I ended up returning and purchasing an Alogic Clarity 5K Touch 27" Monitor instead. It is comparably priced, one of the few 5k monitors on the market, it has "close enough" picture quality to what you would get with the apple studio display. But!!! It supports HDMI among all the other popular display protocols. AND, it's touch screen! Like it's everything I would've expected from a premium Apple product, but was severely disappointed and I was very misinformed. I was incredibly happy I purchased through Amazon instead of Apple, because Amazon let me return the display. Thank you Amazon!! I would've been so upset if I was stuck with it. The Alogic 5k is such a better buy, much better financial decision. I attached a pic of the Apple Studio Display side-by-side with the Alogic Clarity 5k. Honestly in my opinion, it looks like the Clarity matches the picture on the Macbook better than the Studio Display does! The studio display looks more saturated or overly-vibrant to be honest. lol I mean, totally not a bad thing! Again the picture quality on it is legitimately breath-taking… but I thought it was kinda funny to see them side-by-side I was like hmmmmm does the Alogic really have a better color match?? Let me put a disclaimer: I am NOT a professional videographer, photographer, or anything even close. I'm a software developer, so my most important thing is clear crisp text, with a bright, beautiful, vibrant picture. I don't have a super delicate eye to the intricacies of color accuracy so take my assessment with a grain of salt.
