Purchase options and add-ons
From beloved fantasy author Terry Goodkind, Stone of Tears marks the second epic installment of the bestselling Sword of Truth series--adapted to television as Legend of the Seeker.
Kahlan has at last gained the one goal she had always thought was beyond her grasp ... love. Against all odds, the ancient bonds of secret oaths, and the dark talents of men long dead, Richard has won her heart.
Amid sudden and disastrous events, Richard's life is called due to satisfy those treacherous oaths. To save his life, Kahlan must forsake Richard's love and cast him into the chains of slavery, knowing there could be no sin worse than such a betrayal.
Richard is determined to unlock the secrets bound in the magic of ancient oaths and to again be free. Kahlan, alone with the terrible truth of what she has done, must set about altering the course of a world thrown into war. But even that may be easier than ever winning back the heart of the only man she will ever love.
War, suffering, torture, and deceit lie in their paths, and nothing will save them from a destiny of violent death, unless their courage and faith are joined with luck and they find the elusive...Stone of Tears.

Terry Goodkind is a #1 New York Times Bestselling Author and creator of the critically acclaimed masterwork, ‘The Sword of Truth’. He has written 30+ major, bestselling novels, has been published in more than 20 languages world-wide, and has sold more than 26 Million books.
‘The Sword of Truth’ is a revered literary tour de force, comprised of 17 volumes, borne from over 25 years of dedicated writing. Terry Goodkind's brilliant books are character-driven stories, with a focus on the complexity of the human psyche. Goodkind has an uncanny grasp for crafting compelling stories about people like you and me, trapped in terrifying situations. With masterful storytelling, Goodkind brings us into the lives of his characters; characters that must rise to face not only challenges, but their deepest fears. For that reason, Goodkind’s characters speak to the best and worst in all of us.
While ‘The Sword of Truth’ series is confirmation enough of Goodkind’s incredible storytelling abilities, his broad talents are also clearly evident in his contemporary novels, set within our own world. His post-‘Sword of Truth’ books are a thrilling, dizzying, mix of modern narrative, with every bit of Goodkind’s masterful voice intact. The bond built between the reader and one of the world’s great authors, rises above worlds and settings, mere backdrops for Goodkind’s uniquely intricate stories of life, love, challenge, and triumph.
"My privilege in life is the joy of writing books and telling stories about people who fascinate me, the good and the bad. I am grateful to all of my readers for the critical role they play in making these books possible. Your passion is my passion, and I thank you." - Terry Goodkind

This is my 3rd time reading the series.
Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2022I cried when I found out Terry Goodkind had passed a couple of years ago. He is absolutely my favorite author and I am an avid fantasy fan. The story line following Kalhan and Richard is rich, complex, compelling and the best ever character development. There are so many sub story lines that weave an intricate lace through out the series. Small seemingly incidental happenings are richly developed further within the series. While it is the classic GOOD vs. EVIL scenario, the plot is original, unique and extensive. I highly recommend it to any fantasy readers.
PLEASE NOTE: Today I happened to look at the listing on Amazon and saw that reader(s) had reported errors and the publisher had been notified of them. I have found 3 or 4 very, very minor errors such as missing quotation marks (2) that do not distract from the story at all. Please do not let this negatively affect your decision to read and/or purchase this book. It is a wonderful, full of wonder, series and I hate to think that my reporting these minuscule errors will keep anyone from enjoying this remarkable book and series.

grammatical and spelling errors galore but still a great read
Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2012The errors in this kindle book are ridiculous. Its a shame that the great writing its partially ruined by terrible editting. I can't speak for the printed version but this ebook has so many errors, at points, its hard to read. One common example is using the word "that" instead of "than". This seems trivial but after a while, you have to study every instance of the word to figure out which he meant. As the book progresses the errors come more and more often. I just hate that I loved this book so much and every time I got some momentum while reading, I would be dragged to a halt and pulled from the world by these errors. Aside from GRRM's stuff, this is one of the more expensive ebooks I've bought. It would be nice, with the ton of money I'm sure they've made on this book, if they could find someone to properly edit this.
That being said, I loved this book. It gets moving more slowly that wizard's first rule, but it is also more than double the size. Some of the stuff going on felt like it wasn't really needed but by the end, everything tied together nicely. At one point, I was convinced that there was no way this book would wrap up what was going on. It seemed to be dragging its feet but at about the 2/3 mark, this thing just takes off. As another reviewer said, the last 300 pages demand to be read. I thought after this book I might take a break and read some other stuff but I have got to know what happens to Richard, Zedd, Kahlan and the rest.
All in all, this book is amazing. I couldn't give it 5 stars because of the constant annoyance from all the errors but there's no way I would recommend not reading this if you liked the first book.
On a side note, another reviewer complains about a section of the book being moved to the end. I'm not sure this is an error. I believe it was intentional in its placement. The passage at the end doesn't take away from the story but in fact, gives you a "holy $#!+" moment when you realize what's being said. Again, I think this is intentional and even if it wasn't, I think the book is better read like this.

Fantastic! Goodkind has done it again!
Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2018Once again Goodkind has delivered a captivating story and adventure, showcasing characters that you admire and strive to become, particularly Richard Cipher (Rahl) and Kahlan Amnell. These two project such strength in character, yet you see their imperfections. You also see their growth and I sometimes ask myself how I can learn from their trials so I don't make mistakes that could cause serious consequences in my life. I appreciate Goodkind depositing two powerful principles known as Wizard's First Rule (People are vulnerable: they believe what they want to believe or believe what they are afraid to be true) and Wizard's Second Rule (The best of intentions can produce the worst kinds of consequences...Our intentions are irrelevant. Consider wisely before acting).
These two principles seem self-evident and if practiced can save oneself from a lot of heartache. I look forward to book three so see what happens next in this delightful saga.

My third time reliving the tale!
Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2025I first started reading The Sword of Truth series over a quarter century ago in paperback and loved it then. Now, I'm purchasing the Kindle version as I was taught to never loan a book but rather give it away to the next reader so that they can pass it on, and so on, so that amazing stories such as this can touch many lives. I found myself wanting to read the series again, and without a copy after "loaning" another set of the books, the Kindle version with narration is perfect for my busy schedule as I play it in my vehicle on the way to work.
Although not my favorite book of the series, I find that Stone of Tears is a gripping tale that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. I do find that Goodkind gets a little "windy" on some parts of this story dragging out certain descriptions that I find extraneous, but others may appreciate the extra attention to detail. I love the character development (as I do with the majority of the series) and the way Goodkind makes you feel the joys and pains for the characters as the book progresses. As I read, I enjoy rooting for the heroes just as much as I do hating the villians and loving the storyline the whole time.

A great read
Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2007Since I bought the MP3/CD edition, I have two things to comment on, the book itself and the cd production and format.
Goodkind reminds me of Herman Wouk, in both the good and not so good ways. Reading Winds of War, by Wouk, I thought "I wish a better writer could have written this story," as I read on avidly, page after page. He had a way of telling you the same thing three times, or using clunky language. But, then I realized: No other writer thought of this story, it didn't exist before Wouk created it. And I couldn't stop reading the book. Sometimes, a great storyteller is a great stylist, but the most important thing is that he or she tells a great, compelling story. And Terry Goodkind does that. Sometimes, he spends way too many pages telling us something he could have told us in one, but, ultimately, it is well worth the read. It's a powerfully imagined world.
The MP3/CD format worked fine in Media Player and iTunes, once it was imported, but wouldn't play on the car CD player, nor directly off the CD on any other CD Player I tried.
Jim Bond, the narrator, does a consistently good job, giving distinctly different voices for each of the characters. The sound quality is excellent.

Terry Goodkind is my favorite Author
Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2022This series changed my life, possibly even saved it when I was just 13. I was a troubled kid and starting to get into all kinds of trouble, and I ended up checking out Wizard's First Rule to avoid detention, just the first book I grabbed... I was put in a situation where I ended up starting reading it and I never really stopped... I've read them all and my attitude changed, I tried harder and I survived a miserable childhood thanks to this Author who wrote the most magnificent story I've ever read.

Fieldcene5 out of 5 starsLeft me panting for more adventure.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2013I'm giving this novel five stars for the quality of writing, the skillful descriptions, and the astounding plot, despite a need for editing misplaced words amongst the many in this tome.
The plot engaged me after a few chapters. This slowness can be attributed to most of following novels in a series. Once hooked by the characters, the depth of soul-searching and the scope of the land, I couldn't drag my attention away.
Each scene wrapped me with such reality I felt as if I could see everything around the varied cast of characters. Akin to those in Lord of the Rings, they traverse so many different places before they reach the end of the story. The conclusion is satisfying enough to bring a sigh of relief. I highly recommend this masterful novel.
